(shaking her head in disbelief...)

Well, I did it again. I went on a terribly long training ride on Sunday with our cycling group. It was 50 PLUS miles over rolling hills (that's what they said... I classified most of them real hills!!). At one point we were on Lake Ontario!! Y'all know where I live - get a map and check it out. We went far!!!! Not to mention the last 15 miles or so it POURED the rain. And it was only 60 degrees.... yuck. The ride took a total of 5 hours. (we stopped a few times for bathroom, more water, etc...)

I always refer back to when I was a kid and I'd go to the Y in the winter and swim/ play my little heart out and then come home tired. That is what I remember as being "complete exhaustion". I strive for that feeling every time I do any kind of hard workout. I want to come home, my body tired and a general feeling of lead in my chest. As if I almost can't make it into bed before I fall asleep...

Yeah - well I can't seem to capture that kind of tiredness any more and it's really driving me crazy. I was for SURE that I would come home and all I would want to do was let the dogs out, take a hot shower and fall into bed for a few hours.

Nope. Didn't happen. I let the dogs out and took a ridiculously long, hot shower. (it takes a long time to scrub off all that bike grease and dead-animal-road-grime...) Although my body felt like I'd been beaten with a baseball bat from my lower back down, I COULD NOT fall asleep!!

ARG!!! I was completely frustrated. I did end up falling asleep later in the afternoon - but it wasn't that deep, coma-like sleep. I kept waking up, rolling over, tossing and turning.

What does on have to do to get that coma sleep!?!?!? (aside from propofol)

But I do have to say that the past few weeks I've been having exceptionally vivid, strange dreams. (so I'm falling asleep at some point...) At first I thought it was the Tylenol PM. But I've continued to have these types of dreams when I haven't taken any. And what's better (I think) is that I can actually remember them. Usually I know I dreamed but I can't really recall exact details.

So what have I been doing with this dream knowledge?? Racking my brain for deeper, true meaning. No, I'm not consulting any dream books (although I think I own at least one). But trying to put them into context in my real life. But sometimes there's that red-herring. For instance, you wake up thinking you had a dream about someone from in your past. But when you think about it the person was irrelevant. Your brain just put a face to a "character" in order to tell the rest of the story.

I'm not sure any of it means anything, really. But it gives my brain something to chew on while I'm running or biking. Because I DO know that I really have serious issues with the repetition that comes with running and biking.

Am I Trying to Kill Myself???

So, for my friend eyeheartorange, I thought I'd clarify my current athletic endeavors.

Yes, I am training for a century ride on September 18th. I've done this once before, it nearly killed me, and I'm dumb enough to try and do it again. Don't ask me why - I must have a death wish.

And as if that wasn't enough, I realize that I completely slack with cardio during the winter here in CNY. I'm great at lifting weights, but that's it. So to keep me honest during the winter I signed on to run my first half marathon on January 17th in Phoenix, AZ.

I'm not sure what's gotten in to me but if it's something that's keeping me healthy (if it doesn't kill me first) then why not?

A friend of mine keeps asking me to do a triathlon seeing as how I'm into two of three parts - but I don't swim. I can, mind you. If I got dumped out in the open water I can definitely keep myself from drowning (for a bit). But the two times I actually attempted swimming laps I was certain I was going to drown. Not a comfortable feeling. The worst I can do running is fall and skin a knee. The worst I can do biking is fall off (ok, I suppose I could get run over by a car which, admittedly, is worse than just falling off...) but I could drown and DIE swimming. If you get tired you'd better not be too tired to keep yourself afloat until you can be rescued! The risk is a bit too high for me. And it also is probably the reason they having swimming as the first event in a tri as opposed to the last event. Too many people would drown from exhaustion!

So for now I'll keep it on land.

I have to go how far?

I finished up the Twilight series books this weekend. I know, Emily - the addiction is much worse than you feared. But alas, I've had my Edward, Bella and Jacob fix to last me a while... at least until the new movie comes out!!

Since I finished up with the books on Saturday D proposed we do a "group ride" on Sunday morning. Let me explain what that is before any of you come up with utterly disturbing definitions of your own.

D and I are doing the same century ride (100 miles) we did two years ago. It's a fundraiser for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The money raised is used for educational materials for kids on how to stay safe (on the Internet too!) and to help recover missing children. The organization provides 2 group training rides a week for about 2 months prior to the ride to help you get into shape. It's also to help people who've never ridden to get used to riding close in a big group.

Sunday's ride was billed as a 30-40 mile ride in the "easy" category. The longest I've ridden this season has only been 19 miles. But since it said it was easy = flat I figured I give it a try. Including me and D, only 7 people showed up. We've all done the century ride before so there was no one that needed any special instruction , etc... Apparently that meant that the organizers of this ride could just "ride".

At first I wasn't worried. Ok, so no one needed to learn how to ride close and side-by-side. Big deal. The course we were riding that day had already been mapped out and it said it would be flat. However the ride is supposed to be ridden at "ride pace". The day of the actual ride we all ride together in a group, averaging about 16 mph on the flats. Well, 2 guys in this group were racers and everyone else was very experienced and had been riding since probably the snow was completely gone back in the spring. But not me!

I think we averaged about 20-22 mph. It damn near killed me. I made it but I was exhausted when we were done. I also felt self-conscious because the few times they did slow down to pace it was only because I wasn't sure if I could make the whole ride going at the faster speeds.

oh - and it was a full 40 miles....

I don't think I'm going to do any exercising today. Or if I do it will be just a 2 mile jog or something. My arse is NOT getting back on that seat tonight, I can tell you that!!

I think I've already hit up most of you for money - but if not...

If you'd like to donate to that cause (I have to raise $300 for the ride) you can donate directly on my RFMC Page.

Oh, I WANT this!!!

Found on amazon.com....

How cute!!

I'm re-reading the Twilight series. I know... pathetic. I can't help it, I'm addicted.

But the funniest thing has happened. I'll come home and David will ask "Did you see the bit on the web about the Twilight actors doing..... [insert latest story here]?"

Usually I have but in some cases - like last night - he was ahead of me in the Twilight news department. He found a clip of an interview with Taylor Lautner where they showed new snippets of the New Moon movie. He pulled it up for me to watch.

I can't tell if he's taken an interest just to have something to chat about with me or if he's developing a Twilight crush himself and is hiding behind my addiction so no one knows....

I'm betting on the latter... ; )

Anti-stink detergent

Well, MH asked so I'll tell. I found this great detergent called WIN. I have to buy it at Dick's Sporting Goods. I'm sure they carry it other places if you don't have a Dick's. Or you can buy it on their website. However DO NOT go to www.dicks.com. That IS NOT, I repeat -NOT their website. Their website is www.dickssportinggoods.com.

Yes, I know this website issue because I've done it. AT WORK!!

Anyway - this detergent is a bit pricey, $8 for about 20 oz or so. But I don't use it for every load. I just use it for towels (because someone in the house gets them smelling like mildew on occasion... I won't name names, but it's not me.) and for our workout gear. The stinky smells seem to stay in the workout clothes I think because they're all synthetic and such.

Ok, I just went to the Dick's website and they don't carry it online anymore. But you can look for retailers on the WIN site www.windetergent.com

Before I bought this stuff I would put a cup of white vinegar in with any suspicious stinky loads. That seemed to work ok but not as good as this detergent. So if you don't want to shell out bucks or can't find the WIN then just use the white vinegar and see if that works for you.

Finally!

This weekend it was HOT. So I gave D the head's up to prepare the pool.

Yes folks, we actually GOT IN the pool this weekend! Not only that, but we were in it both Saturday and Sunday. AND - I'm planning on jumping in after I get in a run tonight. (Not the 7 miles I'm supposed to run. It's too damn hot! But after a few...)

My century ride is coming up in a month. I think I ought to probably start getting my arse on the bike soon. (FYI - a century ride is 100 miles in one day... quite intensive.) But it's just so much easier (and in my opinion, safer) to just throw on some shoes and go run. Although I have to say in this heat and humidity riding is probably more tolerable. At least there's a breeze blowing in your face.

Regardless of riding or running, I ordered another sports bra today. I've come to that lazy place where I only have enough clothes for a few days of working out before I have to do a "special" load of laundry. "Special" meaning cold water, no fabric softener and a special sports detergent (because I am one stinky girl!!) But then you have to let everything air dry..... well I just couldn't keep up with that laundry pace. Ok, who am I kidding - I didn't keep up with it. If I didn't have clean work out clothes I just didn't do it. So hopefully by adding a few tops and another bra I can make it a 7 - 10 days without having to do a "special" load. Am I lazy or what??

(of course this is NOT instituting the college policy where I had no qualms about wearing a sports bra two or three times before I washed it. Gross, I know but I just can't do that anymore....)

Did I tell you what I did this weekend? I got in the pool!!

Oh, I already mentioned that? Sorry... It was really enjoyable!! I floated in the pool and read a book. (see, I didn't tell you that part!) And I started re-reading the Twilight series. (Hey "Outnumbered" - it occurred to me this weekend that you can add the Twilight series to the mountain of great stuff that Mormon's have done!! ; )

What is my fascination with this series?!?!?!? Emily -I'm still looking up crap on the actors online!! The obsession never really stopped - it just took a short hiatus. And you know what's REALLY bad? That Taylor Lautner is CUTE!!! And this is bad because I know he's a minor!! (At least RPatz was legal!!) And then I found some video clip of Kellen Lutz doing push-ups in front of a crowd of teenage girls (during some Q & A session). Man - he's HOT too! What a bod!

This really isn't appropriate. I mean really - a 30-something year old woman should NOT been swooning over these babies. And babies they are!! I have decided that anyone younger than my brother is a baby to me. Did I mention my brother turns 23 in three weeks??? But I have to admit - I see them and my thoughts turn back to the college days.... ahhh.... the good 'ol days...

; )

Lost friend found!

Ok, as much as FB kinda gives me the creeps on one hand... on the other it has put me back in touch with some old friends. And when I say old I'm not referring to the high school people who never talked to me but have mysteriously decided to "friend" me on the site.

I was friended by an old friend of mine from grad school the other day. I then friended his wife. Then through their postings I happened across the wife's blog.

In case I've told you the story, these are the friends that, at the time, had a 4-year old that called me "dul-ya" and once asked me if he could "play wif your titties". yes, he meant my cats. His mother is allergic and his dad brought him over to play with my cats - but of course he couldn't pronounce it correctly at that age. What makes the story 100% funnier - they're Mormon. His dad put him up to it too knowing he couldn't pronounce it right. And you thought all Mormons were completely straight-laced! HA!!

Well, I went through and read her blog - I've added it to the side. It's called "Outnumbered". She's married with 3 boys. I think you know why she named it that.

It's hilarious!!! If you have kids you're going to love it. If you don't have kids you'll still think it's pretty darn funny. And she adds recipes every Friday! What a great idea!!

Check it out!!

Random Thoughts on Happenin's

Yesterday was the hubby's birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HON!!!

He's finally MY AGE now. At least he didn't bring it up yesterday that I'll always be older than him. He has a tendency to do that on occasion. (and get smacked in the process!)

It was his choice of where to go for dinner. He picked Carrabba's. I thought he would have gone for sushi but I was wrong. Oh well. You know me - I'll eat anything. And instead of a cake this year I went to a fabulous Italian bakery we have and got him a smorgasbord of treats. I grabbed a few lemony things because he really likes those and I don't so I never make anything like that. Plus I threw in a few other of his favorites.

Did I mention he got a new car? Not necessarily for his birthday but he did pick it up this week. It's a 4-door Honda Civic Si. Apparently if you're a car person that "Si" is an important distinction. It's a sport package of some kind. Don't ask me - I'm not a car person. Bit I have to say it is pretty nice - it's got an in-dash navi system and it's a 6-speed manual. I've never driven a 6-speed before. (and still haven't as I have not yet been given permission to drive it ; )

The only bummer - we are now back to 2 car payments when 8 months ago we had none. It's ok though, I went with David to buy it and we wheeled and dealed them to a good deal and a good trade in on his old car which = good monthly payment and payoff in a reasonably quick time frame.

I played Bunco again on Tuesday and won third place! VegGirl hosted and we had great vegan treats. It's funny to listen to the old ladies "Is this vegan food? Really?!? It's pretty good!!" As if vegan's eat food trucked in from Mars. What's worse is she made a veggie dip that I made when I hosted except she used mayo made with canola oil and soy-based sour cream to make it vegan. Everyone RAVED about it!! No one raved about it when I made it! Figures.... (that or everyone was so shocked that vegan food can be edible...)

MH - I need to send you a Bunco kit. I think you'd really enjoy it!

Ok, I've complained about this before but I'm going to again - Will someone please explain to me why I have WORSE zitty skin as an adult than I did as a teenager??? I mean really. This is really getting old! Why is it some things I got lucky with when I was younger/ teenager (skin wasn't too bad, no cramps or bloating during that time....) really kicked in as an adult. I'm not even old and I've already decided getting older sucks. I was always of the mind I wasn't going to fight aging. I changed my mind.

An another thing about getting older.... I've been running pretty consistently. I even registered for my first half marathon in January. I've been watching what I've been eating and I've cut WAY BACK on the beer and wine.

What happens to me? I gain weight.

That NEVER used to happen!! And don't give me that bull about it being muscle. It's not. I'm getting pudge ALL OVER! And it's not budging. Oh well - I hope the hubby is ok with that 'cuz I just don't have the time to run longer than I am right now...

But on the other hand I can't really complain because I'm technically in great health. And that got me thinking. (I know, I know... yes, steam did come out my ears..) I saw something on TV a while back about a woman with leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant and she couldn't find a match. So I decided to join the national bone marrow registry. It does cost a little $ but I decided it was worth it. I joined online at www.marrow.org and they'll be sending my a swab kit. It's just a cheek swab. (MH - I should clarify for you, that's mouth cheek, not butt cheek. For some reason I can imagine you thinking the latter...; )

By the way if you're not a organ donor you might want to consider it. Doesn't cost you anything ($$ wise). Whatcha gonna do with all that extra stuff when you're dead anyway?? Especially if someone could keep living with something of yours? I just read an article this morning about a man training for the Ironman - and he's a heart transplant recipient!! Hell I couldn't do it with all my good functioning, original parts!

Anyway - just some thoughts.

Glimpse of the office

Here's how it works at my office.

Today is Friday. Actual conversation today between bossman and funny lady:

Bossman : Where's Tiny?

Funny lady: Tiny's on vacation.

Bossman: oh, ok

Tiny's been on vacation ALL WEEK. Apparently it just now occurred to him, on FRIDAY, that she's not here.

Yes, things like this happen ALL THE TIME here.

Beware....

If you've seen my FB update lately you'll know that I've been sick. Just a fever and body aches but still - no one wants to be sick when it's nice out!!

I came home at lunch on Monday and pretty much slept the rest of the day. So I asked D if he'd mind picking me up some Tylenol PM for the evening. This way I could take the Tylenol for my body aches and fever but also have some "PM" since I was worried I wouldn't sleep well from having napped all afternoon.

A while back a Rx told me that Benedryl at night is great for sinus headaches, etc... so I take Benedryl in the evenings on occasion. It does knock me out but I still can stumble to the bathroom if nature calls in the middle of the night. Actually I'm quite lucid, probably because I've been taking it so long.

Back to the Tylenol PM.... I took 2 as recommended on the bottle. Unfortunately I had to pee in the middle of the night. Don't worry - I made it up and to the bathroom - but man I was DRUGGED! If you saw me I probably looked really drunk. I remember stumbling sideways when I got out of bed and never took my hand off a wall until I was properly seated. Benedryl does not do this to me.

The next morning I was, apparently, more entertainment than I thought. David said he was reading in bed and I was out cold. I wasn't talking in my sleep per se, but making noises like I was trying to say something but it didn't make any sense.

And the dreams!!! I got smart the next night and only took 1 PM and 1 regular Tylenol. But both nights I had the weirdest and most vivid dreams!!! And lots too. Sometimes I remember my dreams, sometimes I don't. If I dream I usually only remember one of them. Nope with Tylenol PM... quite psychedelic!

If Tylenol PM does this to me remind me to never take Ambien. I'm sure I'd be one of those people out driving their cars without knowing...

Some things never change...

Last Wednesday my dad and his childhood friend, Charlie, came up to visit us. In case you didn't know - my dad grew up in southwestern WV. Of course I've known Charlie, his wife and two kids my whole life. They're great - what we call "good West Virginia people." However Charlie has a very distinct characteristic.... his accent.

My dad's name is Randy. Of course that's short for Randall. Charlie calls him something akin to "Rannall" or "Ranny". Trust me - it cracks me up but you truly have to hear his accent in general to truly appreciate it. : )

And something that wouldn't be surprising - Charlie and my dad are very similar in many ways. Figures - they grew up together. Remember my dad can't get names of things straight - like Dinosaur BBQ... (which he calls Jurassic Park...) Charlie's the same way. They show up and one of the first things they ask for? Beer.

Of course I bought beer! It's my dad. As I'm rattling off what I have Charlie asks:
"Do you have any of that jing-a-ling?... uh, I mean ding-a-ling?" (gives my dad a questioning look) "you know what I'm talking about?"

me: You mean Yuengling??

Charlie: Yeah! That's it! They just started selling it in West Virginia. It's good!

Dad: Charlie, they've been making that in PA for over a hundred years and you've never heard of it?

Charlie: Well no Rannall! I just said they just started selling it in WV!

Needless to say we called it ding-a-ling the rest of the time he was here. And I'd give him as many Ding-a-lings as he want - he cleaned our pool, washed our car....

I'm not kidding. Again, another trait he and my father share - they can't sit still. Dad and I were floating in the pool (yes, we finally used it this year. It was COLD!) and David is mowing the lawn and Charlie is sweeping grass off the sidewalk of the pool. (earlier he was actually cleaning it with the vacuum... )

They next day dad and Charlie washed my car and dad's car. I mean really - on vacation and they can't find something else to do??

But we all had a blast. They ran my ass ragged. We ate out almost every night, played putt-putt, went to a minor league baseball game, took them to do wine tastings all one day...

I probably got run down and I ended up sick after they left. Go figure...
